A Journey Through the Rich History of Nanyang Kopi

Nanyang coffee, also known as Nanyang kopi, holds a significant place in Singapore’s cultural history. Introduced by early Chinese immigrants from the Nanyang region, which includes countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore, this aromatic beverage quickly became a staple in the lives of locals and a symbol of camaraderie among the working class.

The charm of Nanyang kopi lies not only in its robust taste but also in its diverse variants like Kopi O, Kopi C, and Teh C. Kopi O refers to the black coffee, brewed without the addition of milk, while Kopi C is a delightful combination of coffee and evaporated milk. On the other hand, Teh C is a delectable concoction of tea and evaporated milk, cherished by tea enthusiasts across the nation.

Crafting Tradition with a Modern Touch: The Unique Art of Making Our Nanyang Kopi
At Kopifellas, the passion for preserving the essence of Nanyang coffee while infusing it with a contemporary touch sets us apart. The process begins with selecting the finest coffee beans, typically a blend of Arabica, Robustabeans, to achieve a balanced and robust flavor. These beans are then roasted to perfection, releasing the rich aroma and distinct taste.

Next, the roasted coffee beans are ground coarsely to the desired consistency, ensuring that the full flavors are extracted during brewing. The ground coffee is then placed in “sock” filter and this is key in helping to filter out the grinds 

The brewing process begins by boiling water in a large pot or kettle. Once the water reaches the desired temperature, the coffee sock with the ground coffee beans  is immersed into the water, allowing the flavors to infuse. The skilled barista then uses the iconic “pulling” technique, pouring the brewed coffee back and forth between two containers. They then  add sweetened condensed milk or evaporated milk to suit customers’ order / taste.
